Bouncing Grow a Bean in a Bag Challenge
โ ๏ธ Safety Warning
Lima beans should not be eaten raw. This is an observation experiment only.
All experiments require adult supervision.
Materials You'll Need
Gather these 6 items before starting
๐ก Tip: Check off items as you gather them to stay organized!
Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these 8 steps carefully
In this challenge, fold a paper towel so it fits inside the ziplock bag.
Dampen the paper towel with water โ it should be wet but not dripping.
Place 2-3 lima bean seeds on the paper towel, spacing them apart.
Seal the ziplock bag, leaving a tiny opening for air.
Tape the bag to a sunny window at the child's eye level.
Check the seeds daily and add water if the paper towel dries out.
In 3-5 days, you will see the seeds crack open and roots emerge!
Continue observing for 2 weeks and draw the growth in a science journal.
โ Remember: Take your time with each step and ask an adult for help if needed!
The Science Behind It ๐ฌ
Seeds contain a tiny baby plant (embryo) and a food supply packed inside a protective coat. When a seed gets water, warmth, and air, it begins to germinate โ the process of sprouting. First, the seed absorbs water and swells until the coat cracks. Then the root (radicle) grows downward โ it always grows down because of gravity, a response called gravitropism. Next, the stem grows upward toward light (phototropism). The clear bag lets you see this whole amazing process that normally happens underground! Scientists around the world use this same principle in cutting-edge research and technology.
